BIO-OIL

Clinical trials: Scar clinical trial

In 2005, Union-Swiss commissioned a 12-week clinical assessment to test the effect of the topical application of Bio-Oil on the appearance of scars. This was conducted from September to December 2005 by the Photobiology Laboratory of the Medical University of South Africa - an internationally recognized clinical test laboratory that over the past 15 years, has conducted clinical studies for most of the major multinational cosmetic and toiletry companies.

Methodology

  • 24 panelists: 22 female and 2 male - all Caucasian, between the ages of 18 and 60.
  • Application: twice daily.
  • Scars ranged from newly healed sites (6 months) to mature scars (36 months).
  • Scars comprised 12 major scars (such as mastectomies and abdominal surgery) and 14 minor scars (such as superficial grazes and cuts). One panelist had 3 suitable scar sites.
  • Matching scars (2 scars of equal severity on a particular panelist) or scars that were large enough to treat half a scar were chosen to enable a paired study design, allowing for intra-subject comparison.
