BIO-OIL

Uses: Aging skin

Sagging and wrinkled skin is commonly associated with aging and is caused in large part by the weakening of the collagen and elastin support system in the dermis. Bio-Oil contains numerous ingredients that help to plasticize the skin, making it softer, smoother and more supple, thereby reducing the appearance of wrinkled and sagging skin. Bio-Oil also moisturizes the skin thereby improving the texture, tone and appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Bio-Oil should be applied twice daily to the affected area.

If Bio-Oil is used as part of a daily skincare regime, it should be applied before regular moisturizer as moisturizers can leave a residue which can block the absorption of Bio-Oil. Bio-Oil does however have sufficient moisturizing properties so as to render an additional moisturizer unnecessary. Bio-Oil does not contain sunscreen factor. Sunscreen should therefore be applied once Bio-Oil has been fully absorbed.

What is aging skin and how is it formed?

Intrinsic aging occurs chronologically as the body’s processes slow down and skin cells are not replaced as rapidly as they once were. This leads to a reduction in the production of new collagen and elastin, and wrinkles and lines are more prominent as a result of this deterioration of the skin’s fibrous structure. A thinning of the epidermis also causes a loss of barrier properties, further contributing to dehydration and increasing the visible signs of aging.

Extrinsic aging is largely a result of skin damage from UV radiation. Chronic photodamage decreases the skin’s elasticity and increases the incidence of free radicals. UV radiation adversely affects melanocyte activity, as well as the skin’s immune system, leading to premature wrinkling and other, more serious skin concerns. Regular exposure to harsh climatic elements can also be a factor in promoting extrinsic aging of the skin, as can lifestyle factors including smoking and stress.
