BIO-OIL

Uses: Improving the appearance of uneven skin tone

Bio-Oil helps to improve the appearance of uneven skin tone caused by hormonal fluctuations, skin-lighteners or excessive sun exposure. Visible as dark patches on the face or body, uneven skin tone often becomes most apparent during pregnancy, menopause or after exposure to high volumes of UV light.

Application

Bio-Oil should be applied to the areas affected by uneven skin tone twice daily for a minimum of 3 months. Bio-Oil does not contain sunscreen factor. Sunscreen should therefore be applied once Bio-Oil has been fully absorbed.

What is uneven skin tone and how is it formed?

Skin color is determined predominantly by the quantity and type of pigment (melanin) present in the epidermis. There are approximately six genes and various other modifying factors that control melanocyte activity, ensuring a vast number of different skin colors and types. When there is an uneven production of melanin, uneven skin tone can appear on the face and body. These can be triggered by both external and internal causes.

Solar
Ultraviolet (UV) radiation emitted by the sun can cause irreversible damage to the epidermis and is responsible for sunburn and other adverse health effects, including skin cancer, immune suppression and premature aging of the skin. When exposed to UV rays, the skin increases its levels of melanin production in an attempt to protect itself from this damage. This can result in uneven skin tone (dark patches) on both the face and body. While darker skins do not suffer from UV-induced skin damage to the extent that Caucasian skins do, dark skins darken considerably on exposure to sunlight, leading to a prevalence of uneven skin tone across both skin groups.

Chemical
In some cases, the application of harsh chemicals to the skin can result in uneven skin tone. The most common cause of chemical uneven skin tone is the application of poor quality skin lightening products. Chemical uneven skin tone is often exacerbated by exposure to the sun.

Hormonal
Uneven skin tone is often caused by hormonal fluctuations, related to the production of estrogen. As such, this concern affects women far more than men, is often associated with oral contraceptives and is also common both during and shortly after pregnancy.
